RootRural holds its first international exchange between Spain and Portugal

The RootRural / Raíces y Horizontes project will hold its first international exchange visit from 19 to 22 May 2026, bringing together entrepreneurs, social projects, public bodies, associations and rural stakeholders from Spain and Portugal in the territory of Tierras Sorianas del Cid.

This activity is part of the RootRural work programme and aims to create a space for learning, cooperation and connection between rural territories. Over several days, participants will discover local projects linked to entrepreneurship, social innovation, tourism, culture, heritage, gastronomy, remote work, shared housing and population attraction.

The visit will include the participation of Rural Move, the Portuguese partner organisation of the project, and will help build an international community of collaboration between rural initiatives from both countries.

A programme to learn, share and create solutions

Over four days, the group will visit different projects in the Tierras Sorianas del Cid territory, with stops in municipalities such as El Burgo de Osma, Vildé, Gormaz, San Esteban de Gormaz, Atauta, Lodares de Osma, Muriel de la Fuente, Abioncillo, Calatañazor and Rioseco de Soria.

The programme includes visits to projects such as Duero Natura, heritage recovery initiatives in Gormaz and AtautaHotel Virrey PalafoxDulce SofíaRestaurante Nuestra TierraOpen OrbiCuarto LagarEl Guía del BurgoEl Cobijo de MurielLa Fuentona, the Pueblo-Escuela de AbioncilloLa Cerrada Golf, the Rioseco MillRestaurante QuintanaresHotel Río Ucero, the Blas Villodres Foundation and Pastelería Anafre, among others.

In addition to the visits, two co-creation and citizen participation laboratories will be held, open to people from the territory who wish to contribute ideas and work together on real rural challenges.

Two laboratories open to participation

The first laboratory will take place on Tuesday, 19 May, at Duero Natura in Vildé, and will focus on tourism, culture and leisure as challenges and opportunities for the territory. The day will include a visit to the host project, a light lunch and activities in the natural surroundings.

The second laboratory will be held on Wednesday, 20 May, at Open Orbi in Lodares de Osma, and will address remote work, coworking, coliving, shared housing and the attraction of population to rural areas. At the end of the session, participants will visit the Open Orbi project and enjoy a wine tasting with Cuarto Lagar, accompanied by an informal dinner with local products.

In each laboratory, participants will work to identify challenges, detect opportunities and design practical proposals. One of the most viable ideas may also receive professional support to move towards possible implementation.

RootRural / Raíces y Horizontes encourages people and organisations from both Spain and Portugal to take part in this exchange, discover rural projects, share experiences and become part of an international collaboration network.
